Xcel Energy has hired Zachry Engineering Corporation for the design of their second phase expansion at the Jones Power Station near Lubbock, Texas. This is the second design contract awarded for Zachry Engineering at the Jones Station where 170-MW gas turbine-generator units are being added in phases to supply peaking power. Fast starting peaking gas turbines meet consumer needs and provide system stability during high demand periods and during sudden changes in power output from wind and solar plants. This is the second peaking gas turbine to be added at the site. Eventually the two gas turbines will be converted to a combined cycle power plant with a rating of about 550 megawatts. The units being added at the Jones Station use natural gas fuel and meet all of the stringent emissions regulations for new power plants. Gas turbines have been a strong part of the Zachry Engineering design experience and this new unit will add to the portfolio of more than 28,000 megawatts. The design effort started in late 2011 is expected to be completed in late 2012.

Zachry Industrial, Inc. and CB&I were awarded the FEED (front-end engineering and design) contract for the engineering and design of the Freeport Liquefaction Project near Freeport, Texas. Zachry and CB&I will engineer and design three LNG liquefaction trains (each rated at 4.4 million tons per year (mtpa)) and corresponding pretreatment facilities to be located near the existing Freeport LNG Regasification Terminal.

Within the three-train design, the Zachry CB&I JV will develop a fixed price/fixed schedule EPC proposal for both a one-train initial development and a two-train initial development, giving Freeport LNG the ability to choose the size of the initial project phase based on customer demand. The FEED, set for completion in late 3rd quarter 2012, will set the stage for mobilization, likely in 1st quarter 2013.

As the constructor of the original LNG plant, Zachry has significant experience in the LNG industry as well as large capital experience in the region. Zachry will continue its legacy of hiring a local workforce from the Gulf Coast area and continue to build on its long history of community involvement, seeking to create meaningful volunteer opportunities that deliver a durable and purposeful impact. Zachry has already completed several community service endeavors in Brazoria and the surrounding counties, including: Boys and Girls Club in Brazoria County; 4H; Brazoria County Youth Homes; and more.

Zachry completed their 2011 campaign with high marks. On average, each employee gave more than $275 toward United Way in their communities, in addition to their hours of volunteer efforts each year. Monetary contributions increased this year from 2010 by almost $18 per person.

From the Home Office in San Antonio, Texas to job sites nationwide, each campaign was conducted with the same goal and theme, “give an hour, change a life.” This year’s theme represents the strong impact of giving back, and embodies the Zachry value of service that has been in place for three generations.

The team would like to extend a special thank you to all the employees, coordinators and especially the United Way agencies themselves, for allowing Zachry to make a difference. Watch for updates on Facebook/ZachryHoldings as United Way kicks off in fall 2012.

For the second year in a row, Zachry has taken home an industry award for their 401(k) Day, an event geared toward enrolling employees in their corporate-match 401(k) plans, while also offering training, workshops and assistance to guide employees toward healthy financial futures.

This year’s campaign, which was themed with Zachry-sponsored NASCAR racer David Starr and the Zachry No. 81 Toyota, won the prestigious Gold Signature Award from the Profit Sharing Council of America (PSCA) for boosting 401(k) participation by 3.7 percent.

“We set a goal several years ago to win this, mostly because of what it would mean to our employees,” said Cynda Reznicek, director of compensation and benefits. “Hopefully, the real winners are employees who can turn their retirement dreams into reality.”

The campaign was a collaborative effort between several Zachry departments, including the 401(k) benefits group, ESD’s marketing department, benefits communications, Zachry NASCAR group and job site coordinators. Both Home Office and job site employees enjoyed Zachry’s in-house video, scripted and shot at the Home Office and featuring David Starr; educational classes on DVD, recorded in both English and Spanish; hardhat stickers; and prizes.

Zachry Engineering Corporation, a subsidiary of Zachry Holdings, Inc., has been selected to provide design engineering and procurement services as part of the EPC team for the Gainesville Renewable Energy Center, a 100-MW biomass power plant located in Gainesville, Fla.

“Zachry Engineering has a lengthy history and a good resume in the biomass industry, and we are delighted to be providing design services to another renewable energy resource,” said Mike Morris, vice president for Zachry Engineering. “With more than 30 years of experience in a variety of renewable energy technologies, we are able to bring expertise to the application of biomass projects to support the renewable energy effort in the United States.”

This is the second largest biomass project Zachry has designed for the same customer, and it is the third large-scale waste wood power plant Zachry is currently designing.

Preliminary engineering of the power plant has been underway for several months and construction began in March 2011. Commercial operation is expected to commence in late 2013. The 100-MW biomass plant will be fueled by wood waste from urban wood refuse, harvested trees, power line and roadway clearance, and lumber mill waste. At completion, the plant is expected to create enough electricity to power 70,000 homes.

Several organizations have endorsed the project including the Florida Municipal Electric Association, Florida Wildlife Federation, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Florida Forestry Association, Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce, Florida Farm Bureau and the Alachua County legislative delegation.

Leading EPC provider, Zachry Holdings, Inc. has been selected by Sempra Generation to build one of the world’s largest solar power plants, adding a nominal 150-MW solar power plant to the U.S. renewable fleet. Owned and operated by Sempra Generation, the Mesquite Solar Project will be located near Arlington, Arizona, and is projected to offset 200,000 tons of carbon emission each year.

Zachry will manage the installation and integration of more than 800,000 multicrystalline solar panels, providing full EPC. The project is expected to create more than 300 local jobs for construction and installation, with completion scheduled for 2013.

“We are excited about working with Sempra to create hundreds of green jobs and promote sustainable economic development,” said Keith Manning, executive vice president of Zachry Holdings, Inc. “This facility will provide decades of clean electricity for thousands of residents, businesses and communities.”

The installation is projected to annually generate about 350,000 megawatt hours of electricity, enough to power approximately 50,000 homes for a number of decades. The environmental impact of carbon emission reduction equates to the removal of 40,000 cars off the roadway or the planting of 20 million trees.

Zachry Industrial, Inc., subsidiary of Zachry Holdings, Inc., has been selected by Dominion Virginia Power to provide turnkey EPC services in a joint venture, for their Warren County Project located in Front Royal, Virginia. The Warren County project anticipates a full notice to proceed in May 2012, with a completion in 2014.

Once built, the 3-on-1 configured, 1,300-MW combined cycle power plant will provide energy to approximately 325,000 homes. Major technology for the plant will include a Mitsubishi TC4F steam turbine, three Mitsubishi M501GAC gas turbines and dry cooling via an air-cooled condenser.

“Our culture and values align well with Dominion, and we are excited about the opportunity this project will bring in renewing our customer relationship,” said Randy Park, vice president for Zachry. “Our successful bid for this work was built around the depth and completeness of our EPC offering, our recent work with Mitsubishi G technology and our flourishing EPC delivery experience.”

As an economic stimulator to the area, the Warren County project will generate regional contract awards for certain materials and services, and will create hundreds of construction jobs. Zachry will look to their extensive employee database, giving hiring preference to former employees (including Virginia residents), as well as qualified local craft to fill available positions.

SAN ANTONIO – Zachry Holdings, Inc. has been selected by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to engineer and construct the Cape Canaveral and Riviera Beach Next Generation Clean Energy Centers, which together will power 500,000 homes in Florida upon completion in 2013 and 2014.

Zachry will provide engineering and procurement services out of its Amarillo, Texas, office and provide construction services on site, creating more than 1,000 direct jobs in Florida. Zachry is scheduled to mobilize in Brevard County in February 2011 and in Palm Beach County in February 2012.

“These high-efficiency projects will deliver a true long-term impact to FPL and its 4.5 million customers. Additionally, the projects underscore our expanded integrated capabilities,” said Keith Manning, executive vice president of Zachry. “Our 50 years of experience in the power industry combined with our construction-driven engineering allows us to lead the gas market in cost-effectiveness and quality.”

The combined 2,500-MW Cape Canaveral and Riviera Beach dual-fuel modernizations will replace outdated plant elements built more than 50 years ago. The new plants will run on 33 percent less fuel per megawatt than the existing plants and are expected to save FPL customers $850 million to $950 million on their bills over the life of the plants.

“Projects of this magnitude can greatly benefit the local community as we strive to hire the majority of our workers from nearby areas,” said Steve Hoech, senior vice president of employee relations. “These projects also present an opportunity for regional vendors and subcontractors to support Zachry on a merit-shop basis.”

The 3-on-1 combined cycle plants will be the first to use the 274-MW-rated Siemens SGT6- 8000H combustion gas turbines. This technology will improve some greenhouse gas emissions on each site by 90 percent and reduce the CO2 emission rate by 50 percent. This equates to removing approximately 90,000 vehicles from roadways annually over the life of the projects.

“We are excited to be a part of such a significant program — especially with one of our longest standing customers,” Manning said. “Our current project success with FPL has given us a great understanding of the quality and detail that they expect and we look forward to a strong, continued partnership with FPL and the communities they serve.”
