Zachry Holdings, Inc. donates to ShelterBox for Haitian earthquake victims

Denver (February 4, 2010) – Zachry Holdings, Inc. donated 25 ShelterBoxes Thursday to the Denver Mile High Rotary Foundation to provide tents, water purifiers, blankets, cook stoves and more, to 250 victims displaced by the earthquakes in Haiti. Each ShelterBox costs $1,000. So far, 5,000 ShelterBoxes have reached the Haitian homeless, helping 50,000 women, children and families achieve a safe, comprehensive solution in the wake of widespread hardship.

Zachry’s service to their communities is a core value and they are pleased to partner with ShelterBox, through the Denver Mile High Rotary Club, in their mission to provide help and hope to those displaced by natural disasters, including those devastated by the recent Haiti earthquakes.

“Zachry has long been a supporter of local communities leveraging employee and company-matched donations along with multiple community service projects to bring a comprehensive benefit where we live and work,” said Jerry Burke, president of Denver-based Zachry Engineering Corporation.

Following the news of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12, 2010 and subsequent aftershocks, Zachry sought to assist an organization that would provide both short-and-long-term care for those displaced in the Haiti disaster. ShelterBox’s values based in responsiveness and compassion fit well with the more than 85-year-old Zachry tradition of giving back.

“One of the attributes we embrace is that we provide a culture where our workforce has the opportunity to provide for those in need,” Burke said. “As a caring force, we are proud to provide much needed support to the relief efforts for the Haiti earthquake victims.”

ShelterBox is a not-for-profit organization that provides essential aid to those affected by disasters, in ways that retain respect and dignity for the victims. In their 10 years, ShelterBox has assisted 800,000 people around the world and they are quickly on track to reach 1 million.

“We always aspire to the goal of helping those that need it most,” said Martin Postma, ShelterBox board member and response team member. ”This donation is a meaningful amount of money that will provide enduring help to those in need as they rebuild their lives.”

The 120-lb. ShelterBox provides a temporary, safe dwelling; it also includes tools, rope, utensils, waterproof ponchos, mosquito nets and children’s school supplies. Each box is numbered and hand-delivered to individuals by the 140 extensively trained response team members. To find out more, visit www.shelterbox.org.
